Description

After much procrastinating in uploading this... I bring you my final for Photoshop class! 8D

We were given the opportunity to re-design a CD cover (or DVD cover, as I got permission to do instead) and I decided to re-design the cover to the 2007 release of the Princess Tutu boxset: [link]

Many fans other than myself have expressed their dislike of the original cover design...and a few reviewers too. [link] [link]
What's wrong with it? Well, it has Rue on the front...and even though she's my favorite character, she's not the main character for the series, and displaying her uber-slutness on the cover is kind of a cheap cop-out advertisement...like they were trying to market the series to the "blood and boobs" crowd. :/ (Not to say that I don't love that picture of Rue. It's beautiful and sad, and very vulnerable, but still slutty... I would say that she "plays" a slut throughout most of the series, without actually being one.) The font is entirely inappropriate and the back cover looks very slapped together. (The back cover not shown in my example pic linked above) The screenshots are decent, but the "plot synopsis" is entirely stupid, the composition is uncreative, and the legal text takes up way too much space. A lot of things to be wrong with one cover.

Since I love the series so much and wanted a better cover for it, I thought I'd give it a shot. I definitely wanted the darker tone of the series to shine through the most, which is what really sets it apart from the "girly kid's show" it is usually perceived as. I also opted to use the clock theme--soooo much fun to play with and works well as the motif for the series. :D

Screenshots were taken myself and the clear, solid images were traced by myself in illustrator. All other editing done in Photoshop. Some logos were traced in Illustrator. Plot synopsis written by me. The phrase at the top is a direct quote form the series. All legal stuff that was on the original box is there, with the design credit changed to myself.

FEEL FREE to DOWNLOAD the full-size version and print for your own use! Be aware though, that it is slightly bigger than standard 8.5"x11" paper, so try to get it printed on larger paper if you can. Enjoy!

CRITIQUES, PLEASE! Looking at this, there's a few things I might still want to go back and change... But I'd like to hear what others have to say. :)

I would like to make this my DVD cover too. But first, can I asked what the exact size of the paper should be before I print it out?
