Subaru of .hack//SIGN has to be my all-time favorite female anime character. Out of all the animes I've seen, and the characters within them, I relate to Subaru the most.
Having been paralyzed from a car accident, Subaru (or rather, Mariko Misono) joined an MMORPG called "The World", which was the only place she could walk around freely. (And I don't know if many people know this, but Japan is rather non-handicap-accessible; as is my understanding, if you're in a wheelchair, you're virtually bound to your home.) It was there that she eventually made somewhat of a prominent figure of herself, made friends, and formed the user-based organization known as the "Crimson Knights". (More info here: [link] )
I'm a lot like that. I may not be physically handicapped, but I do find myself more comfortable with online interaction than with real world interaction. I feel more like I can be myself, without immediately being judged by my physical appearance or the way I speak. I also, on more than one occasion, have formed and led a group that did not go the direction I intended. (As was the case with Subaru and the Crimson Knights.) Upon finishing the .hack//SIGN series, I was filled with a profound gratitude toward all my online friends. Much of the series discusses how people can choose how they behave online, and it's amazing how many people have chosen to befriend me, or even give me a friendly hello, rather than vent all their anger and hate on someone they've never met and probably never will meet. There is a profound difference between the two types of people.
The song I quoted above plays during my favorite episode, "Recollection", which takes place just after Subaru disbands the Crimson Knights. She spends the entire episode remembering when she first started The World and her relationship with Crim. It also explores how strong she became since then, and she is able to stand up to another player who threatens her. At the end she wanders into Tsukasa, her cloathing all a mess, and collapses into his arms, and just cries there. (And I have a friend who reminds me much of Tsukasa. I think he/she knows who he/she is.)
In any case, I give you all my first installment in my Character Tribute Project. [link] Poor Subaru has been sitting in my computer unfinished for months! She is finally done.
However, critique is still VERY WELCOME! I may even make adjustments if I deem it necessary.
